About Manado, North Sulawesi
Manado city is the provincal capital of North Sulawesi. Manado is
the starting point for exploration of the Minahasa region's many
attractions. Fun-loving and extroverted, the Minahasa people live
in neat wood frame houses, with fences and flower gardens, giving
Manado a European feel. There is a wide range of hotels and restaurants.
Those with an adventurous palate should try the famously hot and
spicy Minahasa cuisine. The city's numerous shops and markets are
filled with an abundance of consumer goods and agricultural produce,
while behind every building are glimpses of emerald hills and azure
sea.
Inland from Manado, a trip
through the Minahasa Highlands will take you to intriguing prehistoric
above-ground burial sites, volcanoes, hot springs, the highland
lake Tondano and breathtaking panoramas of lush mountains, coffee
and coconut plantations, orchid gardens and terraced hillsides.
From Manado, also be sure to visit the Dua Saudara Nature Reserve,
home to birds and other wildlife unique to Sulawesi, such as the
Tarsier - the smallelst monkey, cus cus, Hornbill etc.

months from the date of entry into Indonesia. In the past, the nationals
of 48 nations were given a 60-day stay (visa free) upon arrival

Weather and Climate in Manado
Like other regions in Indonesia, North Sulawesi has a typical equatorial
climate with two seasons: rainy and dry. Starting in September,
cool Northwesterly winds pick up moisture while crossing the South
China Sea and arrive in the Sulawesi Sea about November. The wet
season lasts from about November to March, but it is usually less
pronounced than in many other parts of Southeast Asia and thus not
really a serious concern in North Sulawesi. Hence you can visit
Manado year round! You are practically free to consider your own
schedules, and perhaps avoid the holiday crowds.

Women Traveller
Manado is generally perfectly safe for women travelers, even for
those who are traveling alone. Common sense prevails of course,
and young travelers should be cautious about lingering in isolated
and lonely places at night. As a solo women travelers, if you plan
to go to the Pub or Cafe in Manado city after 9 PM, you should take
a taxi. While traveling in some parts of North Sulawesi, although
you are unlikely to be at physical risk, you could be exposed to
'teasing' by young local men. If you want to avoid it then pay attention
to the local norms of dressing and behavior. Women are expected
to dress modestly, covering their legs and shoulders. Most the local
people in Manado may not approve of women wearing shorts and short
skirts. Dressing decently and staying well groomed will improve
the impression you make on local people. It will help reduce sexual
harassment as well :). In general you will find that there is respect
and great concern for your safety and welfare. People even go out
of their way to assist you. Other info for women travelers too,
that in Manado Supermarkets / Pharmacies, it is very difficult to
find tampons ( carefree etc). You should consider bringing extra
from your country.
